In short: Three 5 kg bricks of washed, calcium-buffered coco coir (also called coco peat) — about 225 litres of peat-free growing medium in total, each brick expanding to about 75 litres with about 20 litres of water. pH 5.5–6.5, electrical conductivity (EC) below 0.5 mS/cm, 100% coconut husk, every batch tested before dispatch. Free UK delivery from our UK fulfilment centre.

  • About 225 litres in total — three individually wrapped bricks; expand one at a time
  • Saves £2.48 compared with buying three singles
  • Buffered and washed — no rinsing or Cal-Mag pre-treatment needed
  • 100% peat-free — renewable coconut husk from India
  • Small to store — each dry brick is about 30 × 30 × 14 cm

How to use it

  1. Put one brick in a large bucket or trug (each grows to about 75 litres).
  2. Add about 20 litres of clean water — warm water speeds it up.
  3. Leave it 20–30 minutes while it swells.
  4. Break it up with a fork or your hands until light and even.
  5. Repeat with the next brick when you need it — the others keep for up to 24 months if stored dry.
  6. Use it on its own for seeds and hydroponics, or blend it — see mix ratios for every plant. Coir contains almost no nutrients, so feed or blend with compost.

What it's good for

Large raised beds, greenhouse benches, allotment plots, polytunnels, bulk propagation and a season's supply for keen growers. The economical choice for overseeding a whole lawn: at a 3–5 mm seed cover, three bricks cover 45–75 m². Enough for a dozen 40-litre bags of potatoes, a summer of hanging baskets and strawberry pots, several reptile or terrarium enclosures, a winter's medium for composting toilets or peat-free bulb fibre by the bowlful. Why buffered coco coir matters

Raw coco coir holds sodium and potassium on its exchange sites and takes calcium and magnesium from your feed — plants go pale and stall even when you feed them properly. Blue Apple Garden's bricks are calcium-buffered at source, so those exchange sites are already filled when the coir reaches you and your plants can use their feed from day one. There is no rinsing, no Cal-Mag pre-treatment and no adjustment period.

Every batch is checked for pH (5.5–6.5) and electrical conductivity (EC, below 0.5 mS/cm) before dispatch. More detail: why buffered coco coir matters and buffered vs unbuffered.

Questions

Is coco coir the same as coco peat?

Yes. Coco coir, coco peat and coir pith are names for the same spongy material from coconut husks. Despite the name, it contains no peat. More on the names.

Does it contain nutrients?

Almost none. Blend it with compost or use a liquid feed from the first true leaves.

How much do I need?

Each brick makes about 75 litres. Use the coco coir calculator for beds, pots and lawns.

How long do unopened bricks keep?

Up to 24 months if kept dry, so you can open one brick at a time.

Are there any downsides?

It holds lots of water, so add perlite for pots, and it is not acidic enough for blueberries on its own. The downsides and how to avoid them.

Can I return it?

Yes — unused, unopened items within 14 days. See our returns policy.

Very impressed with Coco Coir bricks. Ordered a 3 pack and surprised with how big and heavy they plus and how much they swell. Perfect addition to my sandy soil in raised bed.
