These voluntary moves are the practical reality for UK gardeners. There is no statutory UK peat ban currently in force — a Horticultural Peat (Prohibition of Sale) Bill was introduced in Parliament in February 2026 as a private members' bill, but is not yet law.
What Is Coco Coir? (And Why It's Also Called Coco Peat)
Coco coir is the fibrous material extracted from the husk of a coconut — the layer between the hard inner shell and the smooth outer skin. After the coconut's water and flesh are harvested for food, the husks would otherwise be burned or discarded. Instead, they're soaked, separated, and processed into a growing medium that has displaced peat moss in commercial horticulture worldwide.
Why two names? "Coco coir" describes the full range of fibre products extracted from the husk — including pith, fibre, and chips. "Coco peat" specifically refers to the fine, sponge-like pith that resembles traditional peat moss. In the UK retail market the two terms are used interchangeably, and product packaging often says "coco peat" because it tells gardeners this works the way peat does, without the peat. We'll use the more precise "coco coir" throughout this guide.
Despite the similar name, coco coir contains absolutely zero peat. It is a 100% peat-free, fully renewable growing medium that holds moisture well, drains freely, and blends easily with compost, perlite, and other amendments.
How Coco Coir Is Made — From Coconut Husk to Compressed Brick
Quality coco coir doesn't come straight off the coconut — it goes through five distinct processing stages. Understanding the production chain helps you spot good coir from poor coir on the shelf.
- Decortication — the husk is mechanically separated from the inner coconut. Long fibres (used for ropes, brushes, and matting) are extracted; the leftover dust and short fibres become the raw coir.
- Retting and ageing — the raw material is soaked and aged for 3–6 months. This breaks down lignins, reduces tannin content, and stabilises the structure. Cheap coir often skips or shortens this stage, which shows up later as discolouration in nutrient solutions and inconsistent water retention.
- Washing — fresh-water rinsing removes the natural salts from the husk. Quality producers measure post-wash electrical conductivity (EC). Under 0.5 mS/cm is the professional standard. Higher EC means residual salts that will damage roots.
- Calcium buffering (optional but critical) — washed coir is treated with a calcium nitrate solution. This saturates the coir's natural cation exchange sites with calcium, preventing it from later stripping calcium and magnesium out of your fertiliser feed. Buffered coir is ready to grow in straight away; unbuffered coir is not.
- Drying and compression — moisture is reduced to roughly 12% and the coir is hydraulically compressed into bricks (typically 5 kg, expanding to ~75 litres). Compression cuts transport volume by up to 90% and gives the product a 24-month shelf life.
Coco Coir vs Peat Moss: Why It Matters in 2026
Peat moss has been the backbone of UK horticulture for over a century. The reasons gardeners loved it are real: stable structure, excellent water retention, easy to handle. But its environmental cost has become impossible to ignore — and its growing-performance gap with modern coco coir is wider than most realise.
The carbon arithmetic
UK lowland peat bogs lock up an estimated 3 billion tonnes of carbon and form at roughly 1 mm per year. Each bag of peat-based compost represents centuries of slow accumulation released back into the atmosphere within a single growing season.
Coco coir flips this maths. It's a by-product of an existing food crop — coconuts — harvested annually. Husks that would otherwise be burned or discarded are recovered into growing medium. Even after factoring in transport from Sri Lanka, a 5 kg coco coir brick has a substantially lower lifecycle carbon footprint than the equivalent volume of peat-based compost.

By Raw Material
Three distinct materials are extracted from coconut husks, each with different properties:
The fine, spongy dust that closely resembles peat moss. Excellent water retention. This is the material most gardeners mean when they say "coco coir" and is the type we supply.
Long, coarse strands of coconut husk. Adds aeration and structure to mixes but holds very little water. Often used in hanging baskets, liners, and erosion-control matting.
Small chunks of coconut husk, similar in function to bark chips. Good balance of water retention and air space. Commonly used in orchid mixes and as a mulch layer.
By Product Format
Coco coir is sold in two main formats. The difference affects how much you pay, how easy it is to store, and how quickly you can start growing.
Dried coir pressed into a dense, compact brick — typically 650 g or 5 kg. Add water and it expands to many times its compressed volume (a 5 kg brick yields up to 75 L). This is the format used by professional growers and nurseries worldwide.
Coir that has already been hydrated and fluffed, then packed into bags (typically 25–70 L). Ready to use straight out of the bag with no preparation. Widely available in garden centres and online.
By Processing Level — This Is Where It Really Matters
This is the difference most shoppers miss, and it has the biggest impact on plant health:
Straight from the husk with no treatment. High in salt (sodium and potassium) and natural tannins. Can damage sensitive plants and interfere with feeding. Rarely labelled honestly — often sold cheaply online with no processing details.
Rinsed to reduce salt and EC. A step up from raw, but the coir's natural binding sites still attract calcium and magnesium from your nutrient solution — leading to deficiencies even when you are feeding correctly. This is the most common type sold in the UK.
Washed to remove salts, then treated with calcium nitrate to saturate the coir's natural binding sites. This prevents the coir from stealing calcium and magnesium from your feed. Stable pH (5.5–6.5) and ultra-low EC (≤0.50 mS/cm). Ready to grow.

What's positive
- By-product status — recovered from coconut harvesting. Husks aren't grown for compost; no additional land use.
- Renewable on annual cycles — versus peat which forms at 1 mm per year.
- Compression for transport — a 5 kg brick replaces ~50 L of bagged compost. Roughly 90% less transport volume per litre delivered.
- Reusable — buffered coir survives 2–3 grow cycles before breaking down, halving lifetime substrate consumption versus single-use peat.
The trade-offs
- Water use in processing — washing and buffering uses fresh water in production regions where water can be a constrained resource. Established suppliers recycle process water; cheap producers often don't.
- Transport from Sri Lanka or India — sea freight from South Asia adds carbon. Compression mitigates much of this (one container holds many times the equivalent volume of bagged compost), but the impact isn't zero.
- Producer variability — coco coir quality varies dramatically between mills. Cheap unprocessed coir creates plant problems and frustrated gardeners; quality buffered coir is what we supply.

Coco Coir Quality: What to Look for When Buying
The UK shelf is full of coco coir products at very different quality and price points. Most of the disappointment gardeners report online comes from buying the wrong grade — not from coco coir as a category. Five things to check on any product page or label:
- "Calcium-buffered" or "pre-buffered" stated explicitly. If it isn't stated, assume it isn't — and budget for ongoing Cal-Mag supplementation. Cheaper bags often hide this fact.
- Electrical conductivity (EC) below 0.5 mS/cm. The professional standard. Higher EC means residual salts that damage seedlings and mature plants alike.
- pH stated and within 5.5–6.5. Anything outside this range needs amendment before it's usable.
- Source country. Sri Lanka and India dominate quality production. Vague sourcing ("imported", "natural origin") is a flag for unprocessed material from less regulated suppliers.
- Per-litre price, not per-bag price. Compressed bricks always look more expensive at the point of sale until you do the maths. A 5 kg brick at £16.99 expands to 75 L (~£0.23/L) versus a 50 L bag at £15 (£0.30/L). Brick wins on value once expanded.
Building a Growing Mix — A Simple Guide
A growing medium is what roots grow into. A good mix balances moisture retention, drainage, airflow, and nutrient availability.
