Know Your Coir

Washed and Buffered Are Not the Same Thing

If a supplier only says "washed" or "low EC", that's half the job done. Here's the difference — and why it decides your customers' results.

What washing does

Soaking and rinsing flushes out the loose, soluble salts — mainly sodium and chloride. That lowers the EC, but it only deals with what's floating free.

What buffering does

Buffering soaks the coir in a calcium and magnesium solution. Calcium displaces the sodium and potassium clinging to the coir's exchange sites, which are then rinsed away — leaving the coir pre-charged with the nutrients plants actually need.

Why it matters

Feed unbuffered coir and it swaps your feed's calcium and magnesium for its stored sodium and potassium — causing deficiencies, EC swings and weak early roots. Buffered coir is already in balance: the feed you mix is the feed plants get.

Ask any supplier one question: "Is this washed, or washed AND buffered?" Ours is both — washed and buffered, with every batch lab-tested to prove it.
How We Compare

Where We Sit Against Your Alternatives

Buffered coir isn't rare. A buffered-coir supplier that publishes pallet prices, holds UK stock, ships in days and offers 30-day terms — that's rare.

FAQs

Trade Questions, Answered Straight

What's the minimum order?
Six 5 kg bricks — the £12.00-per-brick sample tier, sent as a carton so you can test the product properly before committing. Standard trade pricing starts at 30 × 5 kg bricks.
How do payment terms work?
New trade accounts pay by card at checkout. Once approved for credit (subject to status and a credit check), you can order on 30-day terms up to an agreed limit. First orders are card-only while we set your account up.
Are prices really delivered prices?
Yes — every tier includes pick, pack and delivery to mainland England. Scotland, Wales, Highlands & Islands are quoted before you commit. The ladder is quoted ex VAT; the Buy-Now packs and your checkout total include VAT — and you receive a full VAT invoice either way.
Can I see quality data before I buy?
Yes. Every batch is lab-tested (pH, EC and more). Order a 6-brick sample and we'll include the batch test data with it.
Do I have to sell at your retail price?
No. Our £16.99 RRP is guidance only — you always set your own resale prices, online and in store.
What about returns?
Check your delivery on arrival and tell us about shortages or damage within 3 working days — we'll replace or refund faulty or incorrectly supplied goods. Full details are in our trade terms, supplied with your account approval.
When do the plant-specific mixes launch?
All six mixes (Houseplant, Tomato & Veg, Ericaceous, Orchid, Cactus & Succulent, Seed Starting) arrive with our next container, launching together. Mention the mixes in the application-form notes and we'll notify you with trade pricing first.
Is your coir certified or accredited?
Our supplier operates ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality and environmental management systems, and every batch is tested before dispatch. We publish what we can prove — if we can't back a claim with batch test data, we don't make it.
