Buy Coco Coir — Buffered Coco Coir Bricks

Buffered coco coir — also called coco peat — in compressed 5 kg bricks. Every brick is washed to an electrical conductivity below 0.5 mS/cm, calcium-buffered to pH 5.5–6.5 and tested before dispatch, so it is ready to use as soon as you add water. One brick expands to about 75 litres of peat-free growing medium for seeds, pots, raised beds, hydroponics and lawns, delivered free from UK stock.

Why buy buffered coco coir from Blue Apple Garden

  • Calcium-buffered: raw coir locks up calcium and magnesium from your feed; ours is pre-buffered so plants get what you give them from day one — why buffering matters.
  • Washed to low salt: electrical conductivity (EC) below 0.5 mS/cm, so there is nothing to rinse out before planting.
  • Tested every batch: pH 5.5–6.5 and EC checked before dispatch.
  • 100% coconut husk, peat-free: a renewable by-product of the coconut industry.
  • Free UK delivery from UK stock: orders are usually dispatched within one working day.

How much coco coir do I need?

Coco coir is usually blended rather than used neat, so you need less than the volume you are filling. Rough guides:

  • Raised bed 1 m × 1 m × 20 cm deep = 200 litres of mix. At 30% coir that is about 60 litres — one 5 kg brick.
  • Containers and grow bags: mix 1 part coir to 1 part peat-free compost — one brick plus 75 litres of compost fills about four 40-litre bags.
  • Lawn seed cover at 3–5 mm deep: one brick covers roughly 15–25 m² — see coco coir for lawns.

From brick to growing medium in about 20 minutes

  1. Put the brick in a large tub, trug or wheelbarrow — it grows to about 75 litres.
  2. Add about 20 litres of water and leave it for 20–30 minutes.
  3. Break it up by hand or with a fork, and use it neat or blended — see the mix ratios for every plant.

Coco coir questions

Is coco coir the same as coco peat?

Yes. Coco coir, coco peat, cocopeat and coir pith are names for the same coconut-husk growing medium. Despite the name, coco peat contains no peat — the names explained.

Do I need to rinse or buffer it?

No. It arrives washed and calcium-buffered, so you only add water to expand it.

Can I use coco coir on its own?

Yes for seed sowing and hydroponics, with a liquid feed. For pots and beds most growers blend it with compost and perlite, because coir itself contains very few nutrients.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are usually dispatched within one working day. The 5 kg brick travels by Royal Mail Tracked 48, typically arriving two to three working days after dispatch; the 15 kg pack goes by courier, typically two working days after dispatch. UK delivery is free.

Can I buy coco coir in bulk?

Yes — trade packs run from a 6-brick sample box to a full pallet of 202 bricks. See trade and bulk coco coir.

Is coco coir sustainable?

Coir is made from coconut husk, a by-product of the coconut industry, and is fully peat-free. Blue Apple Garden is named by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) among the brands that are peat-free across their whole range.
