Coco Coir Bricks UK — Compressed, Buffered & Ready to Grow
A single 5 kg coco coir brick expands to approximately 75 litres of premium growing medium — just add water. Compressed for easy storage and shipping, our bricks are pre-washed, buffered with calcium and magnesium, and tested to an EC of ≤ 0.50 mS/cm. Free UK delivery included.
What Are Coco Coir Bricks?
Coco coir bricks are blocks of compressed coconut fibre — the natural husk that surrounds every coconut. After the husks are processed, washed, and dried, the resulting coir is hydraulically compressed into dense bricks that are a fraction of their expanded volume.
When you add water, a 5 kg brick swells to roughly 75 litres of loose, airy growing medium. This compression makes coco coir bricks far more practical than bagged compost: they are lighter to handle, cheaper to ship, and store indefinitely in a dry place without degrading.
Coco Coir Bricks vs Bagged Growing Media
Many gardeners ask why they should choose compressed bricks over ready-mixed bags. The table below breaks down the key differences.
| Factor | Coco Coir Bricks | Bagged Compost |
|---|---|---|
| Weight (per 75L equivalent) | 5 kg (dry brick) | 30–40 kg (pre-mixed) |
| Storage space | Minimal — stackable blocks | Bulky — needs large area |
| Shelf life | 24+ months (dry) | 6–12 months (degrades) |
| Shipping carbon footprint | Low — compressed, lightweight | High — shipping water + bulk |
| Consistency | Batch-tested, uniform | Variable between brands |
| Peat content | 0% — 100% coco coir | Many still contain peat |
| Cost per litre | ~£0.23/L (£16.99 ÷ 75L) | £0.15–£0.40/L (varies) |
How to Hydrate & Use a Coco Coir Brick
Use a wheelbarrow, mortar tub, or large storage box. The brick will expand to 15× its compressed size, so allow plenty of room.
Pour warm water over the brick evenly. Leave it to absorb for 20–30 minutes, then break apart any remaining clumps by hand.
Use pure for hydroponics, or blend with compost and perlite for containers. See our mix ratios page for crop-specific recipes.
What Makes Blue Apple Garden's Coco Coir Bricks Different?
Every brick is pre-treated with calcium and magnesium to neutralise the cation exchange sites. This prevents Ca/Mg lock-out — the number one cause of poor results with cheap coco coir. Read our buffering guide.
Washed three times in fresh water to remove excess sodium and chloride. Our EC is tested at ≤ 0.50 mS/cm — well below the 1.0 mS/cm threshold where salt damage begins.
pH 5.5–6.5 straight out of the brick — the ideal range for nutrient uptake across vegetables, flowers, and herbs. No pH adjustment required before planting.
Each 5 kg brick expands to approximately 75 litres — enough to fill several large pots, a standard grow bag, or a section of a raised bed.
Made entirely from coconut husk — a renewable by-product. No peat, no added chemicals, no synthetic wetting agents. See our peat-free compost guide.
Every order ships free to mainland UK addresses. Bricks arrive in protective packaging to ensure they reach you dry and intact.
