What Is Coco Coir? (In Brief)
Coco coir is a natural growing medium made from the fibrous husk that surrounds a coconut shell. The raw husk is processed, washed, and dried to produce a lightweight substrate with outstanding water retention and natural aeration — two properties that make it one of the most versatile growing media available.
You may also see it referred to as coco peat, coir pith, or simply coconut fibre. These terms are used interchangeably across the horticultural trade. Regardless of what it is called, the product contains absolutely zero peat — it is made entirely from renewable coconut husk.
Why UK Growers Are Switching to Coco Coir
The UK government has committed to phasing out peat-based growing media for amateur gardeners. With peatland covering just 12% of the UK's land area yet storing an estimated 3.2 billion tonnes of carbon, the environmental case for alternatives is clear. Coco coir has emerged as the leading replacement — and for good reason.
Coco coir holds up to 8–10 times its own weight in water while still allowing air to reach the root zone. This balance is difficult to achieve with peat or bark-based mixes.
The fibrous structure of coco coir creates air pockets throughout the medium, promoting healthy root growth and reducing the risk of waterlogging.
Coconut husks are a by-product of the coconut industry. Using them as growing media diverts waste from landfill and avoids the environmental damage caused by peat extraction.
A single 5 kg compressed brick expands to approximately 75 litres — the equivalent of several heavy bags of compost, at a fraction of the storage space and shipping weight.
Containers, raised beds, grow bags, propagation trays, hydroponic drip systems, and NFT channels — coco coir works across every method. See our how it works page for details.
Blue Apple Garden's coco coir arrives with a stable pH of 5.5–6.5, sitting in the optimal range for nutrient uptake in both soil-based and hydroponic setups.
Coco Coir vs Peat — Quick Comparison
| Property | Coco Coir (Buffered) | Peat Moss |
|---|---|---|
| pH (typical) | 5.5–6.5 | 3.5–4.5 (acidic) |
| Water retention | 8–10× its weight | ~4× its weight |
| Renewability | Renewable — coconut by-product | Non-renewable — takes millennia to form |
| Re-wetting | Re-wets easily if dried out | Becomes hydrophobic when dry |
| Aeration | Excellent — natural air pockets | Compacts over time, reducing airflow |
| UK regulatory outlook | No restrictions | Sale to amateur gardeners being phased out |
How to Use Coco Coir — From Brick to Growing Medium
Set the 5 kg brick in a large container — a wheelbarrow, mixing tub, or 90-litre storage box works well.
Pour approximately about 20 litres of warm water over the brick. It begins expanding within minutes.
After 20–30 minutes, break the expanded coir apart by hand. It is now ready to use as a standalone medium or blended with compost and perlite.
What Makes Blue Apple Garden Coco Coir Different?
Most coco coir sold in the UK is raw and unbuffered — meaning it still has open cation exchange sites that aggressively strip calcium and magnesium from your nutrient solution. This leads to nutrient lock-out, calcium deficiency, and slow establishment.
Every Blue Apple Garden brick is pre-washed (to flush excess sodium and potassium salts) and pre-buffered with calcium and magnesium (to saturate cation exchange sites). The result is a substrate that works from day one — no rinsing, no conditioning, no adjustment period.
