Seed Starting Mix — Peat-Free Propagation Medium

A fine-sieved, buffered coco coir seed starting mix with added vermiculite. Ultra-low electrical conductivity (EC) and naturally low in pathogens — ideal for germination, seedlings, and cuttings where a gentle, consistent growing environment is critical.

Good to know: Coco coir is also known in the trade as “coco peat” or “coir pith” — it is the fine, spongy material from coconut husks. Despite the name, it contains absolutely zero peat and is 100% peat-free.

Why Choose Our Seed Starting Mix?

Seeds and young seedlings are vulnerable to high salt levels, inconsistent moisture, and pathogens in the growing medium. Standard multi-purpose compost is often too rich and too coarse for reliable germination. Our Seed Starting Mix uses fine-sieved buffered coco coir with vermiculite to create a uniform, moisture-retentive medium with ultra-low EC — giving seeds the best possible start without the risk of nutrient burn or damping off.

Key Features

  • Fine-sieved coco coir — creates a smooth, even surface for tiny seeds to make good contact with the medium.
  • Buffered and pre-washed — calcium and magnesium balanced with ultra-low EC, so delicate seedlings are not exposed to excess salts.
  • Added vermiculite — retains moisture evenly across the tray, reducing the risk of dry spots that cause patchy germination.
  • Naturally low in pathogens — coco coir is processed at high temperatures, reducing the risk of damping off and soil-borne disease.
  • Peat-free and sustainable — made from renewable coconut husk fibre, supporting the UK peat ban.

Perfect For

  • Starting vegetable seeds — tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, lettuce, and brassicas
  • Flower seeds — cosmos, zinnia, sweet pea, and marigold
  • Herb seeds — basil, coriander, parsley, and dill
  • Rooting softwood and semi-ripe cuttings

How to Use

Fill seed trays or modules with the Seed Starting Mix and firm gently. Sow seeds at the recommended depth and cover lightly. Water from below using a tray to avoid displacing small seeds. Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain even moisture until germination. Transplant seedlings once they have developed two or more true leaves.

Buffering specification of the coco coir base

This mix is built on our calcium-buffered, lab-tested coco coir base — the same buffered coir we sell as a 5 kg compressed brick.

  • Coir base pH: 5.5–6.5
  • Coir base EC: below 0.5 mS/cm in fresh hydrated coir
  • Buffering: calcium-buffered at source
  • Coir source: direct import from Kerala, India
  • Batch testing: EC and pH lab-tested on every batch of base coir
