Tomato & Veg Mix — Peat-Free Growing Medium

A high-performance buffered coco coir blend designed for tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, and other hungry fruiting vegetables. Enriched with perlite and a slow-release organic feed to support strong root development, heavy flowering, and abundant fruit production throughout the growing season.

Good to know: Coco coir is also known in the trade as “coco peat” or “coir pith” — it is the fine, spongy material from coconut husks. Despite the name, it contains absolutely zero peat and is 100% peat-free.

Why Choose Our Tomato & Veg Mix?

Tomatoes and fruiting vegetables are heavy feeders that need a growing medium with excellent water retention, good drainage, and a steady supply of nutrients. Standard multi-purpose compost often compacts over the season, reducing airflow to roots and leading to blossom end rot or poor fruit set. Our Tomato & Veg Mix uses buffered coco coir as the base — which naturally holds moisture without becoming waterlogged — combined with perlite for drainage and a slow-release feed to sustain the plant through its critical fruiting phase.

Key Features

  • Buffered coco coir base — pre-treated to balance calcium and magnesium, helping prevent blossom end rot in tomatoes.
  • Added perlite — improves drainage and prevents the mix from compacting over the long growing season.
  • Slow-release organic feed — provides a steady supply of nutrients for 4 to 6 weeks after planting.
  • Excellent water retention — coco coir holds up to 10 times its weight in water, reducing watering frequency.
  • Peat-free and sustainable — made from renewable coconut husk fibre, supporting the UK peat ban.

Perfect For

  • Tomatoes — bush, cordon, and cherry varieties
  • Peppers, chillies, and aubergines
  • Courgettes, cucumbers, and squash
  • Beans, peas, and other productive vegetables
  • Grow bags, large pots, and raised beds

How to Use

Fill your pot, grow bag, or raised bed with the Tomato & Veg Mix. Plant your seedling at the same depth as its original pot, firming gently around the base. Water thoroughly after planting. Begin supplementary liquid feeding once the first fruits start to set — the slow-release feed in the mix will sustain the plant through the initial growth phase, but fruiting vegetables benefit from regular liquid tomato feed once cropping begins.

Buffering specification of the coco coir base

This mix is built on our calcium-buffered, lab-tested coco coir base — the same buffered coir we sell as a 5 kg compressed brick.

  • Coir base pH: 5.5–6.5
  • Coir base EC: below 0.5 mS/cm in fresh hydrated coir
  • Buffering: calcium-buffered at source
  • Coir source: direct import from Kerala, India
  • Batch testing: EC and pH lab-tested on every batch of base coir
