Coco Coir vs Compost Compared

In short: Coco coir and compost serve different purposes: coco coir is a structural growing medium (drainage + water retention + root support, low nutrients) while compost is a soil amendment (nutrients + microbes, less structure). Most UK growers use both — typically 50% coco coir with 50% compost — to combine drainage and microbial activity.

This is the question that trips up most gardeners: "Can I just use compost instead of coco coir (also known as coco peat)?"

The short answer is no. They're completely different things doing completely different jobs.

But the longer answer is more useful: they're designed to work together, and understanding that distinction changes how you approach your entire growing setup.

What Are They?

Coco Coir: The Growing Medium

Coco coir is processed coconut husk fibre. It's a buffer medium that stabilises pH and nutrient availability, a medium you grow plants in, mostly inert until combined with compost or nutrients, and reusable season after season.

Compost: The Nutrient Source

Compost is decomposed organic matter—the result of breaking down plant material, food scraps, manure, or other biodegradable waste. It's biologically active and nutrient-rich, a soil amendment that adds nutrition and biology, teeming with microorganisms, and single-use (breaks down over the season).

Different substances. Different purposes. Different roles.

Physical Properties

Coco coir maintains its structure over time. Fibres are tough and resist breakdown, fluffy and light when hydrated, maintaining aeration over multiple seasons without compacting under repeated watering. In a container, coco coir is the "scaffolding."

Compost breaks down continuously. As microorganisms consume it, the material degrades, starts rich and crumbly, gradually becomes denser, compacts over a season, and must be replaced. In a container, compost is the "fuel."

Nutrient Content

Coco coir contains calcium and magnesium from buffering but limited NPK and no micronutrients. It's nutrient-poor—you control exactly what nutrition your plants receive.

Compost contains nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, micronutrients, and beneficial microorganisms. A plant can feed off compost for months without additional fertiliser.

Water Management

Coco coir holds water consistently (approximately 9–10× its dry weight (supported by RHS research on coir water retention)), doesn't waterlog easily when mixed with perlite, and drains predictably.

Compost holds water inconsistently. Well-made compost drains reasonably well initially, but as it breaks down and compacts, drainage deteriorates and waterlogging risk increases.

How They Work Together

Here's where it clicks: they're not competitors. They're complementary.

Most serious gardeners use both: Coco coir (80–85%) + Compost (15–20%)

Coco coir provides stable structure, water management, reusability, and predictable pH. Compost provides nutrients, microorganisms, organic matter, and initial biological activity.

Example: Growing Tomatoes

Pure coco coir approach: 100% buffered coco coir + perlite, fertilise every 7–10 days. Excellent, predictable growth but higher effort.

Pure compost approach: 100% quality compost, plant and hope. Good initial growth but nutrition fades mid-season and structure collapses.

Combined approach (best practice): 80% buffered coco coir + 15% compost + 5% perlite, light feeding every 2–3 weeks. Strong growth, stable structure, reduced feeding needs. The combined approach wins on all fronts.

When to Use Pure Coco Coir

Use coco coir alone if you want precise nutrient control (hydroponics, specialty crops), prefer a reusable consistent medium, are growing in containers wanting year-round reusability, or are supplementing with liquid fertiliser anyway.

When to Use Pure Compost

Use compost alone if you're amending existing garden soil, want a "set and forget" feeding approach, are growing directly in soil (not containers), or are on a tight budget with access to free homemade compost.
