Why add coco coir to soil?
Coco coir holds several times its weight in water while staying open and airy — the combination most garden soils lack. In sandy soil it acts as a moisture reservoir; in clay it physically separates the fine particles so roots and water can move; in containers it keeps mixes light and re-wettable after dry spells.

How to do it (10 minutes per bed)
- Expand the brick: soak a 5 kg buffered coir brick in about 20 litres of water for 20–30 minutes — it fluffs up to roughly 75 litres.
- Spread 3–5 cm over the bed or border.
- Fork or dig in to a spade's depth, mixing rather than layering.
- Water thoroughly to settle the blend.
- Feed as usual. Coir adds structure, not nutrition — keep your normal compost or fertiliser routine.
What to expect — and what not to
- Expect: more even moisture, easier digging, better establishment in dry spells, and a bed that re-wets instead of shedding water.
- Don't expect: feeding. Unenriched coir contains very few nutrients — pair it with compost or a fertiliser programme.
